We had been talking about it for a long time and now we finally got round it painting the scout hut. We worked it out and it had been nearly 10 years since the hut was last painted. I personally liked the scout hut painted white but it was decided we would paint it green. We were running out of time to get it done before winter but with many hands we got it finished. 9am start on the saturday morning we turned up with plenty of sanding blocks and paper. It was soon obvious we were never going to finish before 2015 trying to sand it by hand so we made a quick trip to the local hire company and got some big sanders. On Saturday we managed to sand and prime the front and one end of the scout hut. Thankfully ASDA had agreed to come and help us on the Sunday they had no idea what they had let themselves in for. While we carried on sanding the back of the hut the volunteers from ASDA started glossing the rest of the hut after about 30mins on of the volunteers pointed out the hut was drinking the paint and it would need a second coat. We kept all the helpers supplied with hot drinks, biscuits and sausage sandwiches i'm sure this is the only reason we managed to get this finished. After the painters made it to the door it turned out where they started was now dry so the went back to the beginning and started the second coat. By the end of Sunday one half of the hut was painted the other half was primed ready for painting. Some of the leaders went to the hut every night the next week to finish painting. Although it was very hard worked and I ached for weeks after the hut looks great now and will hopefully last another 10 years.
Finally we would like to say a big thank you to all the helpers from ASDA for the hard work you put in. Also to Johnstone's decorating centre at Clifton Moor York for all the help you gave us when trying to work out how much and what type of paint was needed.
