Redmire Station house November 2013
You are not reading this wrong we actually went away for a weekend in November. You can not guarantee getting good weather in summer so we had no idea what it would be like in November. When we discussed going away for a weekend so late on in the year it was decided within seconds of the discussion starting we would need to be indoors not in tents. We arrived at the station house on the Friday evening, the scouts were happy to entertain themselves in the games room while the leaders got sat around the fire. The following morning the leaders were already cooking breakfast before the scouts woke up, Sausage, Egg, Beans, Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Hash Browns, Toast and cereal not a bad way to start the day. 4 Leaders jumped into the mini bus and took the scouts to Askrigg where we gave them a map and a route card to find there own way back to the station house. The route should have been 19.9km and the leaders had chosen points to meet up with the scouts and points where we could watch them from. We saw them have a disagreement about which way to go but after walking back and forth they passed the first check point. Problem was they never appeared on the other side of the farm. 30 mins passed and we still could not see them coming up the path. Using our trusty binoculars we found them sat on a gate trying to work out which way to go. In the end they did not follow the path but walked up the road to find a point on the map where they knew they ware and got back on track from there. The next section would take them into Carperby where we would meet them and drive them to Aysgarth for dinner, this section should have taken about 40mins at the speed they were walking. This left enough time for the leaders in the minibus to go back and pick up the 2 leaders left at site who had been cooking pasta for dinner so they could have a warm meal. We picked up the other leaders and headed back to Carperby to find no sign of any scouts. 3 leaders headed up the path up the hill they should have been on to see if they could see them still no scouts. The other 3 leaders took the minibus down the road to try and find them. After about 15mins of searching we found them they had taken the wrong path and although heading in the right direction no where near where they should have been. Panic over they where put in the bus and taken for dinner. It had taken them so long to get this far by the time they had eaten it was already starting to get dark so we amended the route to take in Bolton Castle and 3 leaders finished the walk with them, the other 3 leaders headed into Leyburn for some chocolate prizes for the games later and also some ear plugs as someone in that leaders room can really snore. Back at the station house we saw the lights heading up the lane so we quickly hid behind some trees, as the front group came past the first leader jumped out and scared the female scouts what came next they did not expect as 2 more leaders jumped out scaring the same female scouts. One of the scouts at this point laid on the floor screaming, sounds very cruel but the leaders had fun. We had a brilliant weekend and will hopefully be back next year. Below are a few pictures from the weekend.
